Seldom are debut novels this good, but this post-apocalyptic story was impressive! A handful of survivors are barely making it day to day. Among these survivors are Amy and Baby. Amy lost everyone when They came – family, friends & neighbors. Out of necessity, Amy starts venturing outside her home. It is intensely dangerous with Them lurking around every corner. Plus, They are attracted to light and noise, so Amy has … Continue reading

Arcadia Awakens by Kai Meyer

Arcadia-Awakens

Title: Arcadia Awakens Rating:  Genre: YA / Dystopia Release Date: February 14th 2012 Publisher: Balzer + Bray Review: Kai Meyer creates a unique world right under our noses, a world in which Italian mobs control everything, and even your family can’t be trusted. The story is full of myth and intrigue and kept me focused all the way through. Why I loved this book: Arcadia Awakens is unlike anything I’ve read before. Being in a foreign place added to the mystery of the myth as a whole and gave me a new place to learn about. Rosa isn’t a shy, … Continue reading

Unravel Me by @TaherehMafi

UnravelMe4av2blue

Title: Unravel Me Rating:  Genre: YA / Dystopia Release Date: February 5, 2013 Publisher: HarperCollins Review: After reading Shatter Me, I couldn’t wait for book two. Now that I’ve read it, I can’t say that I was disappointed. Unravel Me held all of the romance as the first book, but Juliette retained her personality. As infuriating as it sometimes was to have her second guess herself over and over again, it fits with her character and the crossed out passages within the story. Without those elements, this series wouldn’t be nearly as good. I think of Omega Point the same … Continue reading

Carlousia by E.G. Carter

carlousia-the-passing-of-the-guard.1

Title: Carlousia: The Passing of the Guard Rating:  Genre: Middle Grade / Fantasy / Adventure Publisher: iUniverse Release Date: November 17, 2011 Review: E.G. Carter creates a beautiful and adventure-filled land in Carlousia. Though I normally avoid middle grade fiction, I picked up Carlousia because of the cover alone. Reminiscent of M.C Escher’s mythical and physically impossible land, E.G. Carter creates his own mystifying world. Why I liked this book: Eddie seemed like a normal pre-teen boy. He was adventurous and had a go-get-’em attitude that I really liked. Though he was upset by his grandfather’s death, he understood that something … Continue reading

Trouganda – Silver Tears Book 1 by Daniel J. Strait

TROUGANDA

Title: Trouganda – Silver Tears Book 1 Rating:  Author: Daniel J. Strait Genre: Adult/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Adventure Publisher:  Outskirts Press Release Date: September 26, 2012 Review: I was really looking forward to reading this book. The premise sounded intriguing: a science fiction adventure that follows the life of a young girl with a prophetic birthmark through her training in the deadly arts and her ability to become invisible until she must pass her final test among the dangers and wonders of Trouganda. Now, granted, I don’t read a lot of science fiction as a rule, but the idea of a tough female warrior-type … Continue reading

The Star Child by Stephanie Keyes

The Star Child

Title: The Star Child Rating:  ★★★ Genre: YA / Supernatural / Mythology Publisher:  Inkspell Release Date: September 21, 2012 Review: Because of the mix of Irish and Welsh mythology, I was really interested in The Star Child. I loved the basic plotline, but, overall, it was an okay read for me. Kellan, while precocious (graduating Yale at the age of 17), was sweet and kind, lovable in all aspects. The tense relationship between Kellan and his father and brother was believable and my heart went out to him for trying so hard only to be shut down time and time … Continue reading

After Ever by Jillian Eaton

after ever

After Ever starts as a fresh and feisty novel that caught my attention from the get-go. Winnie, the protagonist, has a sharp tongue and an even sharper inner monologue that sets her apart from the other, somewhat generic female leads and this is what made this story interesting.  Her dislike for her dad’s girlfriend brought some humour to what, essentially, were pretty dire circumstances.  Girlfriend #3 is a bad excuse for a step mother and it’s Winnie that plays guardian to her little brother, Brian. When her dad takes the family off for a winter holiday, Winnie can think of … Continue reading

The Emerald Isle by @kate_hinderer

emerald-isle-cover-200

In a genre that is wildly saturated with vampires, werewolves, zombies and dystopian hierarchies that make armys out of their offspring and/or send them to fight for survival; I am always on the lookout for something different to keep my imagination entertained. And so I was relieved to find that Emerald Isle by Kate Hinderer is about a different race of mythological creatures. Welcome to the world of the Mermaids. Or, Mermen to be precise. Two of them. And they are both vying for the attention of our protagonist, Audyn. Audyn is working on Fascination Island – a high brow … Continue reading

Innocent Darkness by @SuzanneLazear

Innocent_Darkness

Title: Innocent Darkness Rating:   Genre: YA / Fantasy / Steampunk Publisher:  Flux Release Date: August 8, 2012 Review: The cover of “Innocent Darkness” just plain rocks. When I picked up this book, I was excited. After all, who doesn’t love a great steampunk! Fairly quickly into the novel, I was put off. I was excited about reading the novel in the first place, but all the steampunk-ness that I had been expecting was crammed into the beginning. The majority of the novel actually turned out to be a typical YA faerie tale. … Continue reading

Just when you think all of the original story ideas are taken, you get a pleasant surprise. The storylines are very interesting and the characters are well developed. Kelly McGinnis has a life that could be described as complicated. She has a husband with Multiple Sclerosis and 8 year old twins, and she has just been laid off … Continue reading

Wicked Hungry – Review

wicked hungry

As an avid reader and literature savant, I don’t often find the time to pick up middle-grade fiction. But with a title like “Wicked Hungry,” I couldn’t resist. Teddy Jacobs’ exciting novel tells the story of a boy caught in the midst of supernatural catastrophe. After a traumatic sports injury, Stanley Hoff thinks he will never be able to run again, let alone play any high-impact sport. But when he and Karen, his best friend, turn to a new and mysterious herbal supplement, strange things start happening. Karen suddenly develops an aversion to sunlight and Stanley? He’s hungry all the … Continue reading

Until Next Time: The Angel Chronicles Book 1

Until Next Time JPEG

Title: Until Next Time, The Angel Chronicles Book 1 Author: Amy Lignor Genre: YA, Fantasy, romance Publisher: Tribute Books Release Date: January 24, 2012 Review: I’ve never been a huge fan of “angel stories”, but “Until Next Time” was an exception. We have two separate plots, with two complex angels/people. Emily and Matt are angels in Heaven, but on Earth they are Liz and Daniel. In Heaven they are soul mates, made for each other, and destined to be by each other’s sides for all time. On Earth, they have no knowledge or memory of who they are, and each … Continue reading
