Review: Harper Lee and Peppermint Candy by Paula Hennessy
Title: Harper Lee and Peppermint Candy Author: Paula Hennessy Rating: ★★★★★ Genre: Coming of Age Publisher: Self Published Publication Date: July 31, 2012 Review: When I first started reading this book, I thought it was going to be something like The Notebook, save for the title. It opens with an elderly couple doing what they can to upset the neighborhood. I immediately fell in love with them for this reason alone. I love Addie and Henry and wish all of us had grandparents like them. Shortly later comes a call from their daughter, Laura, who focuses on being center of … Continue reading
September Girls by @BennettMadison
Title: September Girls Rating: Genre: YA / Paranormal Release Date: May 21, 2013 Publisher: HarperTeen Review: From the blurb on the back of the book, I thought September Girls was going to be a light and fun summer read, but it was anything but. Enter Sam, an emotionally confused teenage boy with a hormone-ridden older brother, a pandering father, and a stressed out mom who leaves her family to go to some mysterious place called “Woman’s Land” (think back to Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique). While Sam bashes women six ways to Sunday, is egged on by his brother and best … Continue reading

The Obvious Game by Rita Arens
Title: The Obvious Game Rating: Genre: YA / Contemp Release Date: February 7, 2013 Publisher: Inkspell Publishing Review: It’s not a secret that I’m not generally big on YA contemp. Being several years out of my angsty-teenage stage, I can comfortably say that I don’t really know what teenagers are thinking. But the mind of Diana Keller is an open book and her story speaks loud and clear. Rita Arens presents the world of anorexia nervosa in a gritty, realistic way while still maintaining the voice of a young girl. Diana was nervous and self-conscious, dramatic and very blase about … Continue reading

Carlousia by E.G. Carter
Title: Carlousia: The Passing of the Guard Rating: Genre: Middle Grade / Fantasy / Adventure Publisher: iUniverse Release Date: November 17, 2011 Review: E.G. Carter creates a beautiful and adventure-filled land in Carlousia. Though I normally avoid middle grade fiction, I picked up Carlousia because of the cover alone. Reminiscent of M.C Escher’s mythical and physically impossible land, E.G. Carter creates his own mystifying world. Why I liked this book: Eddie seemed like a normal pre-teen boy. He was adventurous and had a go-get-’em attitude that I really liked. Though he was upset by his grandfather’s death, he understood that something … Continue reading

Title: Back to Bataan Author: Jerome Charyn Rating: Genre: YA Historical Fiction Publisher: Tribute Books Publication Date: July 2012 Review: Jack is an 11 year old boy who is living his life focused on the death of his father during the war. Set becoming a soldier and going off to war like his father, Jack’s dreams are constantly crushed when his mother tells him he’s not old enough. Night of the Purple Moon by Scott Cramer (@cramer_scott)
If I had to choose five words to describe this book, they would be intelligent, innocent, mature, poignant and engaging. Night of the Purple Moon tells the story of a group of pre-pubescent kids who are left parentless after a deadly comet passes through Earth. For months everyone has been looking forward to seeing the comet pass through and Abby Leigh and her family are no exception. They’ve talked about it at school and over dinner and so finally, when the night arrives, everyone takes their ringside seats to witness the experience. Little do they know that with such beauty … Continue reading
After Ever by Jillian Eaton
After Ever starts as a fresh and feisty novel that caught my attention from the get-go. Winnie, the protagonist, has a sharp tongue and an even sharper inner monologue that sets her apart from the other, somewhat generic female leads and this is what made this story interesting. Her dislike for her dad’s girlfriend brought some humour to what, essentially, were pretty dire circumstances. Girlfriend #3 is a bad excuse for a step mother and it’s Winnie that plays guardian to her little brother, Brian. When her dad takes the family off for a winter holiday, Winnie can think of … Continue reading
Review: The Color of Snow by Brenda Stanley
Title: The Color of Snow Author: Brenda Stanley Rating: Genre: YA Fiction Publisher: Tribute Books Publication Date: June 2012 Review: All her life, Sofie has thought she was living under a curse. Her father kept her secluded from the world to protect others. When Sofie’s Papa is arrested for shooting the boy she loves and her only friend, she is taken away from him and forced to live with extended family she never knew and questions everything she was ever taught about herself and the world around her. I think the author did a great job at capturing the feelings … Continue reading
Rebels By Accident review by Patricia Dunn ( @SheWrites )

Bras, Boys And Blunders by Vidya Samson
Title: Bras, Boys And Blunders Rating: Author: Vidya Samson Genre: YA/Contemporary Publisher: Amazon Digital Services, Inc. Release Date: June 6, 2012 Review: Overall, an enjoyable story. This coming of age novella chronicles the fish-out-water exploits of Veena, a young Indian girl attending Catholic school in multi-cultural Bahrain. It turns out that it doesn’t matter where you live, there are universal problems that teenagers the world over cope with. Veena deals with insecurities over her looks, worries about interactions with boys and embarrassing parents. The narrative is fresh, witty and extremely relatable. Beneath the humor, however, there are serious themes of … Continue reading

Sweet Evil by @Wendy_Higgins
Title: Sweet Evil Rating: ★★★★ Genre: YA / Fantasy Publisher: HarperTeen Release Date: May 1, 2012 Review: In our fast-paced and cut-off world, teenagers are given vast opportunities to incite their deepest desires – sex, drugs, violence, etc. Anna, a southern girl with a sweet disposition, takes things to a whole new level in Wendy Higgins’ “Sweet Evil.” Because, you see, Anna is the daughter of a demon. Before I Breathe by Jenelle Jack Pierre
Rating: Title: Before I Breathe Author: Jenelle Jack Pierre Genre: YA/Coming of Age/Drama Available: Out Now Review: In an age where the Supernatural genre is popular amongst YA books, I was looking for something more grounded to read, something that brought the reader back to basics with reality. Something that didn’t let me have a bit of escapism for a couple of hours. I have to say that Before I Breathe is exactly that – it’s a book about real life situations happening to teenagers across the world, and it’s a story about how one teenager chooses to deal with … Continue reading
That Wedding by @JillianDodd
Title: That Wedding Rating: ★★★★★ Author: Jillian Dodd Genre: YA/Romance/Coming of Age Release Date: Out Now Review: That Wedding, follow up to That Boy, was as good or better! I loved every page of this book, every detail! Jayden has overcome so much tragedy in her life and pushed forward with out a hitch, or so she thought. Jayden starts planning her wedding to her fiance, Philip, and one of the conditions is marriage counseling. I can appreciate the sincerity of marriage counseling and the “devil inside” persona. Some parts of this made me laugh out loud. Pushing forward the … Continue reading
