Hollowland – the first book in the young adult dystopian series The Hollows… “This is the way the world ends – not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door.” Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way – not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies.
The human race is coming to an end because of zombies. That’s right, zombies! These are not the risen from the dead zombies but people infected with a severe mutated strain of the rabies virus, only infectious in humans. Once you’re bitten, virus gets on your skin through a cut or saliva (super contagious) you will become infected and turn into this zombie in three days or less. This story is very intense and had me (yelling) “OH $@!T!” the first few pages in!
The story starts out very strong and the author builds up the scenery quickly around the heroine. Remy escapes a safe house just in time to avoid some of the zombies attacking. Her brother is evacuated as well. Remy picks up a few people in her travels along the way; a 13 year old girl, a former rock-star and an [almost] doctor. Remy finds herself protecting herself and her travelers from a cult compound they run into (you will find yourself wanting to dive into this story just to take this guy out!) and from marauders at another safe house. Remy even picks up a lion along the way that used to be part of a Vegas show act.
I recommend this book to anyone that has a ‘strong’ stomach as there is some graphic detailing when it comes to the ‘change’ and killing of these zombies. There is also a brief adult scene.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next installment as there is a huge cliffhanger (I hate that!).
