The day before graduation is always a time for reflection.  You hang out with your friends, signing yearbooks and taking photos.  You make plans for the summer and you secretly admirer your crush from afar, vowing that you’ll finally get the nerve to say hi.  That would be in a normal society but where Eve lives, our type of normal doesn’t exist.

Eve’s life was turned upside down when a plague took her mother away from at the age of 5.  Eve wasn’t the only one affected.  Thousands of children were left homeless and orphaned when this illness took out the country.  Eve was sent to a school for girls where she learned to play the piano, paint like Van Gogh and received the best education possible.

Her teachers were forthcoming with the heartache and details of lives lost during the plague.  They taught the girls that the King of New America is a man of honor and is the only man you trust.  All other men are dirty and manipulative and should be feared.

Eve is the good girl in school, the class valedictorian.  She is praised by her teachers and classmates, except for Arden.  Arden is rough and extreme, the bully of the school.  The night before graduation Eve catches Arden escaping and threatens to blow her security whistle.  Arden will have none of that and tells Eve a deep and horrifying secret about what happens to the graduates tomorrow when they cross the bridge.  Arden escapes leaving Eve wondering.

Eve sneaks out that night, across the bridge and what she finds makes her sick.  Of course, never the rule breaker Eve is caught sneaking back into her room by a teacher.  With fear evident on her face, the teacher tells Eve of a life that exist outside the walls of the school  A life of running and hiding but freedom at the end.  The teacher helps Eve escape and send her out into the wild.  Eve’s destination is the new town of Califia.

It’s not long before Eve is paranoid and scared of her mind until she finds Arden.  Eve begs Arden to help her make the trek to Califia and together they continue onto their journey meeting Caleb, an escapee from the boys’ concentration camp.  With Caleb by their side the girls feel a bit safer, that is until the authorities catch up with them.  It seems the King as chosen Eve as his next wife and he wants her back!
